The Ghosts Who Solved Their Own Murder

Teresita Basa was an ambitious, friendly but quiet woman. She had immigrated to the US from the Philippines in the 1960’s. Originally, she came to study music, but found her calling as a respiratory therapist in Chicago, Illinois.

On the evening of February 21st, 1977, firefighters were called to her apartment. There, they found that Teresita had been stabbed and set on fire in the middle of her living room.

There was nothing in her apartment that gave them anything to go on other than a note in her calendar to buy tickets for “A.S.”

But then, detectives received a strange call. Dr Jose Chua called on behalf of his wife, who had worked with Teresita. Dr. Chau stated that his wife, Remy, had been possessed by a spirit who spoke Tagalog and had identified itself as Teresita. The spirit of Teresita named Allen Showery as her killer. A.S.

Allen Showery had worked with Teresita and Remy Chua. Upon learning that he was going through some difficult financial times, Teresita began to pay him for odd jobs at her apartment. Upon investigation, detectives found items that had belonged to Teresita at Allen’s apartment. It seemed that Showery had stolen several items of jewelry…
